KOOYONG LAWN TENNIS CLUB – CARPARK AND CLUBHOUSE EXTENSION

The major renovation works that were carried out at Kooyong Tennis Club was certainly the most prestigious project that we had undertaken to date. The club, which is internationally renowned as “The Spiritual Home of Australian Tennis” was opened in 1892. The extension will enable the club to maintain its rich heritage whilst enhancing its experience to its members and public patrons well into the future.

The works included a three-level carpark which provided an additional 130 parking space to the club. The carpark was supported on piles and was built along the Monash Highway. The most challenging aspect of the project was that the carpark was to be constructed in on the mounts of fill that had previously been installed onsite to mitigate flooding risks. This meant that suspended slabs transitioned from conventional formwork to suspended slab on grounds. This work had to be carefully planned with the help of the builder and our formwork engineer.

The supporting in-situ walls throughout the car park, as well as barrier walls around the perimeter of the carpark were changed to shotcrete walls on our recommendation. This recommendation was based on the lack of site access for a concrete pump as well as allowing for a class 1 finish on the inside face of the boundary walls. This saved time off the program as well as proving a product that the client was very happy with.

The Clubhouse extension works include the construction of a three-level extension to the existing building as well as an access ramp. The existing building was underpinned with the extension being supported on piles.

The renovation works meant, for the first time in the Clubs history, that the Clubhouse and the Stadium were connected, offering balcony and terrace areas that overlook both the stadium and terrace areas. The works also included a lounge, boardroom, private terrace and a bar and kitchen.
